kem- : derives instruments from nouns?
-ku : derives instruments from verbs? (maybe lai meant something else in the protolang)
ka- -la : derives sources of objects? (sugar from a sugar cane, a hum from a theremin and work from a computer)

I intended kem- to mean "cause of", "origin of"

I think laiku makes most sense when we see it as a compound. Frex: to hum+to whistle

Because whistling often makes dissonant noise and something which makes a melody when whistling is a flute. Yes, I know that this logic is forced.

I was thinking about starting a thread for this; I think it's important we clarify derivation lest we create dissimilar words which could be derived from another
I also found another case: bobaba: beat; dzebobaba: rhythm. I think dze- must be some way to derive nouns from verbs?
I suggest that maybe, if we do this in the word creation thread, maybe we can explain where we are coming from; it might seem clear to you when you're putting it together, but it can (obviously) be opaque to others!
